I wanted to make a motif (an island) float through being discovered (Island One) to 'The Collapse' of the settlers (Island Two) to once a remembered place (Island Three). To be seen anew from three different perspectives in time and decay
.
.
'Richter's Piano' is a patch of my own creation. I record fragments of melodies into Richter, and Richter neatly organises these ideas into little collections of motifs.
.
.
Richter, (just like his namesake, Gerhard) is fascinated with colour, and he chooses from his collections of motifs the corresponding hue of colour as they appear to which he pre-determined these belong to. (I will find a better way of explaining this, I promise!)
.
.
I proceed to show Richter various colours and he begins to play notes on his piano and string orchestra accordingly, re-mangling and exploring the ideas I shared with him
.
.
I take these ideas and nurse them a little. Process the sounds with field recordings and guitars, and synthesis (don’t worry Richter, you just sit there and do NOTHING! Smh….) and voila! Some music.
.
.
I was inspired to create my ‘Richter’ by Gerard Richter, and his John Cage paintings I once saw at Tate Modern. I then discovered just how much Richter ha (and continues) to create. What an artist!
.
.
There is a little bonus gift for those who buy the whole album.
